EL SHOW DEL PATO ARLEQUÍN / MORE HARLEQUIN DUCK

When you’ve got a mega like Harlequin Duck on your doorstep it’s impossible to resist the temptation of seeing it often; I’ve now been able to enjoy this Icelandic visitor three days on the trot. With time you begin to learn its habits, improving photo opportunities. The duck moves about within a 400 m stretch of river. When the canoeists take to the river the duck usually moves upstream to one of its favourite rapids, and it’s here where it comes really close.

It’s a very active bird, always swimming against the current in a constant feeding frenzy. Every now and then it hauls out on a rock to rest up from its energy-burning feedings style. After a few minutes resting and preening (which is when it looks most like a Torrent Duck), it slips back into the water to find more food.

It’s a real delight to be able to watch it riding the surf so masterfully and at such close quarters. It seems to be really at home here. With luck it will stay around a lot longer.

It’s terrifically tame and inquisitive. If you just sit quietly on the bank the duck itself seems to mosey over to check you out, coming down to 2m!!!

I’ll wind up this blog post with a couple of photos of other ducks that are frequenting the river at the moment. Although not nearly so rare they are certainly beautiful. The drake goosander I caught in flight and the group of two drake and three duck goldeneyes in a quieter stretch of the river.

LONG TAILED DUCKS IN BREEDING PLUMAGE!

The title has already given away the star turn of this post, but I’ll leave it to the end.

This morning, with brass monkey’s weather, we decided to go back to the wonderful Ythan estuary, just before the holidays come and I fly back to Spain.

We started off by patrolling the dunes in search of snow buntings but lucked out, so then we made our way to the estuary proper. Waiting for us there were the first eiders of the day together with red-breasted mergansers and a few waders.

The r.b. mergs are now getting frisky and a few pairs look to have mated up already.

The sanderlings liven up the beach with their clockwork-toy surf running, bunching together in between times...

We decided to walk back along the edge of the water in search of any surprises and add to the day’s duck list. Two of the most beautiful ducks – well, drakes in this case – were the wigeon and the gorgeous goldeneye.

Then at last we came to the best of all. We found a stunning pair of long-tailed ducks with the drake already in breeding plumage. What a stunning duck! Without doubt one of the most beautiful ducks in Europe. I’ll sign off for now with a video and a couple of photos.

SMEW AND A GOOD SUPPORTING CAST

On Sunday 21 November a smew turned up on a nearby reservoir so on the following Monday I paid a quick visit. It’s without doubt one of my top-20 birds, especially the drakes, though this individual was a female/youngster.

It proved easy to find but kept its distance. The only time it came a bit closer the light was bad. Even so, it’s wonderful to see this magnificent bird so close to home.

On the same reservoir there were also some gorgeous drake goldeneyes, a much commoner duck but no less beautiful.

After this quick visit I decided to make the most of the good weather by nipping to the beach, where I had two very agreeable surprises. The first was a lovely sighting of the local bottlenosed dolphin family, a pod of about 8-10 steaming southwards just off the coast.

The second surprise I almost trod on!! A grey seal pup hauled out on the rocks.
Another very good day of wonderful sightings.
