Mi "Local patch"

Últimamente el tiempo no se está portando muy bien con esta parte de Escocia (como es lo normal) y esto significa que salir a pajarear se hace más duro, especialmente si se va a la costa con fuertes vientos.

Ayer, a pesar del fuerte viento, salió el sol por la mañana, así que decidí salir a dar una vuelta por mi "local patch". Esta zona se conoce como "Donmouth", que traducido sería la boca del río Don. Es increíble tener una zona como esta justo al norte de la ciudad para poder escaparse una horita o dos. Ayer me concentré en la zona interior del río porque el viento hacía muy duro aguantar y, especielamente, ver algo en el mar.

Esta es la zona protegida del viento y donde espero que se llene de cosas interesantes cuando haya tormentas en invierno.

La zona estaba llena de gaviotas, la mayoría eran canas, argénteas y reidoras

Lo que le da mucha alegría a esta ría es el buen número de serretas grandes que se mueve por ella. Es una gozada disfrutar de estas aves en la puerta de tu casa, cuando en España es un ave bastante rara de ver.

También tuve tiempo para hacerles algún vídeo

Por último, mencionar a las otras protagonistas del río, las focas. Son muy fáciles de ver desde los puentes.

MY LOCAL PATCH

The weather’s been a bit naughty lately in this part of Scotland (pretty normal up here); this makes birding tougher, especially along the wind-lashed coasts.

Yesterday, despite the gale, the sun came out in the morning so I decided to take a tour of my local patch". It goes under the name of "Donmouth", logically, as the mouth of the River Don. It’s incredible to have a zone like this just to the north of the city for a quick visit in any spare hour or two. Yesterday I stayed mainly in the inner part of the estuary because the wind further out made it very unpleasant walking and almost impossible to see any birds among the white horses on the sea.

This inner zone is protected from the wind and is where I hope to see some interesting birds during winter storms.

The zone was full of gulls, mainly common, herring and black-headed.

One of the best things about this estuary is the rafts of goosanders resting up there. It’s a real delight to be able to enjoy this bird almost on your own doorstep when it’s so hard to see in Spain.

Last but not least, one of the standout features of this river is the seals. It’s dead easy to see them from the road bridges themselves.
