POTPOURRI
These last few weeks, what with the inclement weather and
university work, I’ve hardly got out birding, although last Friday I did manage
to nip off to the Ythan Estuary to enjoy the birds while watching the eclipse.
Here the eclipse was 96%, although the sun only peeped out of the clouds during a short period.

Birdwise the estuary was quite quiet. Many flocks of waders,
like dunlin, knot and sanderling, with the odd ruff thrown in...
Eiders were about in good numbers as always although they
didn’t come very close this time. I did manage to get some snaps in flight,
however.
The surprise package of the day was this flock of whooper swans
that flew over the estuary.
And then, almost back on my own doorstep a new Iceland gull
turned up on the River Don, rounding off the day quite nicely.
