DE VUELTA EN ABERDEEN / BACK IN ABERDEEN

Yo no he tenido demasiada suerte, aunque alguna sorpresa sí que he tenido.

English translation of the text:

After a fantastic summer enjoying red-backed shrikes, redstarts and other goodies in Asturias in Spain, the time has now come to return to Aberdeen to being the second year of my university course, but without turning down any chance to go birding meanwhile.

August has been lively in Aberdeen, with good falls of migrants and a few rarities. The strong easterlies have tended to blow infrequent visitors towards our coasts. I’ve not been too lucky myself but one or two nice surprises have turned up.

The roster of rarities around here lately includes arctic warbler, greenish warbler and barred warbler. One day I tried my luck with the barred warbler seen nearby. I can’t be certain but I’m about 95% sure that I saw it flying into some bushes. Shame they’re such skulking birds.

Wader migration has been lively too, with ringed plovers, knots, purple sandpipers, dunlins, sanderlings, etc...

Knot-flocks are now hundreds-strong. Some are still hanging onto their summer plumage like the lovely bird on top of the rock in photos 1, 2 & 5.

Another wader conserving something of its summer plumage is this ringed plover in Nigg Bay. You can see that its feathers are quite worn.

I’ll wind up this post with the surprise package of the day. While I was seawatching, a skua flew by. It was too far off to identify with binoculars so I reeled off a couple of snaps to see if I could see what it was from a blown-up photo. In flight it looked very slim and delicate with a white belly and black hood.

After checking it out with other birders, we’ve come to the conclusion that it is an adult LONG-TAILED SKUA, a pretty good record for Aberdeen.
