the text:
A FRIEZE OF BRENT
GEESE
I’m still here in
Spain on my mid-term hols and, as is almost a tradition with us now, we decided
to spend the first day of the year at Santona, the best saltmarsh estuary in
the north of Spain. We lucked into a perfect birding day, weatherwise, sunny,
windless, cold at first with many lovely sights of frosted fields and then
building up to a very agreeable temperature of about 13 by midday. We also had
the chance to chat for a while with Ernesto Villodas Antón, the go-to Santoña
man and author, in my opinion, of one of the wittiest and best written birding blogs in
Spain.
As soon as we arrived
we saw the four grebe species that normally winter here: little, black-necked,
Slav and great crested. Handsome rafts of wigeon and mallard floated about the
estuary, together with a single scoter. The sound track was courtesy of curlew,
whimbrel, redshank and greenshank.
The first photo
opportunity of the day came with a great northern diver hanging about the Escalante
channel.
Then, from the Montehermoso
Monastery, after enjoying the grebes, the waders and a small flock of
spoonbills, we saw way off in the distance our main target species of the day. In
recent years brent geese have begun to winter in Santoña in pretty good numbers
for Spain (we counted over 200) and we were looking forward to seeing (and
hearing) this beautiful high-Arctic visitor. Se we jumped in the car and with a
mixture of luck and common sense, and after a 5 k journey through unknown
streets we finally got to the beach where they were feeding.
Picture the scene:
sunny day, deserted beach and this flock of brent geese grazing pacifically on
the seaweed at the sea edge. And all the time they kept up this lovely guttural
chuckle that it their normal flocking call. Obviously we didn’t try to get too
close so the pictures aren’t exactly portraits. But what I like about them is
the frieze effect of the brown beach, the blue sea behind and the geese all
higgledy-piggledy in the middle. I say “pacifically” but as you can see from
some of the photos there were some squabbles between two geese that invaded
each other’s comfort zone. In some of the other photos you can see hanging from
their beaks the seaweed they were feeding on.
The brent isn’t one of
the shyest geese but you still need to be very careful not to get too near. So
I gradually edged towards them, keeping an eye on their behaviour to back off
if the necks came up. Finally the incoming tide meant the seaweed they were
feeding on was out of reach so they just let themselves drift off from the
shore.
Groups of horseriders appeared
and they frightened off a bigger group of brents grazing further down the
beach. These birds came flying towards us and pitched down beside us with the
group we’d been watching, showing us this beautiful approach and landing
sequence with the stretched necks and wings seeking the right balance between slowdown
and height loss until final splashdown.
Seems daft, I know,
but you almost felt proud and privileged that they’d chosen to seek safety by
flying towards you. With so many savages in the world ready to shoot these
gorgeous creatures, and with a legal right to do so, the fact they recognise
other members of the human species as not necessarily an enemy is very moving.
I’ve already mentioned
that one of the loudest callers was the greenshank, and I’ll wind up with a
photo of one from Cicero beach, the last bird we saw in the day.
And last of all, happy
2015 to everyone, with many stunning views of the birds you most dream of. Ours
has got off to a good start.
